Deputy Secretary Veterans Services

Dr. Trevor Albertson is the Deputy Secretary for Veterans Services at the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet). In his role at CalVet, Dr. Albertson oversees and leads the division responsible for administering state mandated veteran benefits, the management of the State Veteran Cemeteries, providing assistance in accessing federal veteran benefits, and outreach to individuals, groups, agencies and businesses that support veterans.

Dr. Albertson served as an active duty Air Force officer for over four years. During this time, Dr. Albertson was posted to Washington, D.C., where he served as a Squadron Section Commander and as a Squadron Plans and Readiness Officer, and in Colorado, where he served first as an Instructor, and later, as an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Dr. Albertson remains an officer in the Air Force Reserve, serving with the 713th Combat Operations Squadron (713 COS) as an Intelligence Officer with the rank of Captain. Prior to becoming an Intelligence Officer, Dr. Albertson served as the 713 COS's Director of Public Affairs. Earlier in his reserve career, Dr. Albertson served on the staff of Headquarters, U.S. Strategic Command in Omaha, Nebraska.

Prior to his appointment with CalVet, Dr. Albertson served on the staff of Congressman Dennis Cardoza (CA-18), where he managed the Congressman's Veterans Advisory Council, conducted the Congressman's veteran casework, and served as a liaison to the military and veteran community. As a consultant with the Intelligence Fusion Center Analyst Training Program, Dr. Albertson worked to develop skilled civilian intelligence analysts with the Intelligence Fusion Center Analyst Training Program. With this program, Dr. Albertson traveled to Intelligence Fusion Centers across the U.S., training terrorism and law enforcement intelligence analysts.

Dr. Albertson is a graduate of Norwich University, where he received his bachelor's degree, cum laude, in History. Subsequent to his undergraduate education, Dr. Albertson received a master's degree in International Affairs from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.; he completed his graduate education by earning his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at the University of California, Merced (UCM), where his major field of study was 20th Century Political-Diplomatic History of the United States, and wrote a dissertation exploring the dissonance between declared and actual U.S. policy. Dr. Albertson participated in the University of California's Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) Public Policy and Nuclear Threats "Bootcamp," a three-week program that acquaints participants with the prominent concepts, science, theories, policy and policy makers of the nuclear field. While at UCM, Dr. Albertson was awarded the IGCC-University of California—District of Columbia (IGCC-UCDC) Dissertation Fellowship in Foreign Policy Studies and was a recipient of the Hildebrand Fellowship.

Dr. Albertson is the author of articles that have appeared as online publications, has taught as an adjunct faculty member at Yuba College, and as a summer school instructor at UCM. Dr. Albertson is a native Californian and is married to Katherine Albertson, nee Piper, of Atlanta; they have a daughter, Mary.
