Undersecretary, Veterans Homes
Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. appointed Brigadier General Robin Umberg to oversee the Veterans Homes Division in the California Department of Veterans Affairs on May 20, 2011. As part of his organizational review of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Secretary Peter J. Gravett elevated Brigadier General Robin Umberg to the level of Undersecretary for Veterans Homes.
Prior to her appointment, Brigadier General Umberg served as Chief of Professional Services, 3rd Medical Command, Fort Gillem, Georgia. As the senior Army Reserve nurse, she was consultant for battlefield readiness, training, and career management for more than 27,000 medical personnel.
Brigadier General Umberg began her Army career when she enlisted at the age of 18 and received a nursing scholarship at Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing. She was commissioned in 1977 and served in a variety of staff and command assignments in the United States and overseas including: Fort Carson, Colorado; the 121st Evacuation Hospital, Seoul, Korea; the United States Army Hospital in Vicenza, Italy; Commander, 4211th US Army Hospital, San Diego, California; and, Commander, 6253rd US Army Hospital, Mesa, Arizona. She deployed in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Brigadier General Umberg was appointed to the Board of Visitors for the United States Military Academy by President Bill Clinton in 2000. She retired from the Army in June 2010 after 36 years of active and reserve services.
Brigadier General Umberg has received numerous awards to include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medals, Army Commendation and Achievement Medals, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star, and two Overseas Service Ribbons. She was presented the Civilian Humanitarian Service Medal from the Secretary of the Army in 1999. In 2006 Brigadier General Umberg was inducted into the Military Order of Medical Merit.
Brigadier General Umberg received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland and Master of Science in Health Care Administration from the University of Northern Colorado.
Undersecretary Umberg's husband of 28 years, Colonel Tom Umberg, recently returned from serving in Afghanistan. They have three children – Erin, Brett, and Tommy.
