How to Get a CalVet Loan

This page contains instructions and links to documents for applying for different kinds of CalVet Home Loans:

  • Purchase of an existing home including homes under construction by developers
  • Construction of a new home on a site you have selected for purchase or already own

You must have a property selected for purchase when you apply for a CalVet Home Loan. If you have not yet identified a property we recommend that you download and fill out our Prequalification Form, a FREE service of CalVet. This information will allow us to confirm that you are eligible and estimate the amount of loan for which you will qualify. Send the completed form to the CalVet Office for the area where you plan to buy your home. You may also start the prequalification process using our online application site.

Purchasing an existing home (including new homes under construction or to be built) or constructing a new home:

  1. Read the latest CalVet Home Loans Interest Rates and Loan Terms.
  2. (Recommended) Contact the nearest CalVet Office for the area where you plan to buy or construct your home. Staff will be pleased to discuss the process with you and assist you in any way they can.
  3. Select a home or homesite. If you are constructing a home, CalVet will need plans and specifications for your new home and a copy of the construction contract with your building contractor before final approval of your construction loan.
  4. Obtain an application package. These documents are available for download at this web site, or you may obtain them from one of our offices. To obtain the package, you may either contact the nearest CalVet Office for the area where you plan to buy your home, or download the forms and instructions from the links on this page. (If you are downloading our forms and instructions, you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Click the link to go to Adobe's site and download this free plug-in.)
  5. Download the following documents and packages:
  6. If you are applying for a CalVet/VA loan (Guaranteed by the USDVA) the following additional forms will be required:
  7. If you will be applying for a construction loan, download these additional documents:
  8. If you are applying for a CalVet Home Loan as a current member of the California National Guard or U.S. Military Reserves, and you have no other qualifying service, download these additional documents:
  9. Fill out these forms and send them directly to the CalVet office for the area where the home you are purchasing is located, or if you are working with a CalVet Certified Mortgage Broker submit the forms to your broker.
  10. Later in the application process you will be requested by CalVet to download the Life and Disability Application Form. (Please do not mail with your application. Download this form when requested by CalVet.)
