The Veterans Home of California
GLAVC Project Description
What levels of care will be offered at the new homes?
California’s new Veterans Homes will only offer levels of care based on a medical model. These levels
of care reflect the rising numbers of aged veterans needing long term care within a medical model. The
new Homes will not provide simple residential (domiciliary) care.
Not all campuses will offer all services, but all services will be available to all veteran members.
Lancaster and Ventura
- Residential Care for the Elderly (RCFE)- 60 beds each
Members admitted to this level of care need assistance with two or more activities of daily living,
but must be able to take their own medications. Typically, these members are active and mobile, and
are encouraged to do as much as is possible for themselves within the context of RCFE care.
- Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) Program- 50 members each
Members participating in the ADHC program are often candidates for admission to a Skilled Nursing
facility, but have family support which permits them to remain at home. ADHC is a therapeutic
health care program designed to permit members to remain outside the Skilled Nursing environment,
while providing caregiver relief and a social outlet.
West Los Angeles
- Residential Care for the Elderly (RCFE) - 88 beds each
Members admitted to this level of care need assistance with two or more activities of daily living,
but must be able to take their own medications. Typically, these members are active and mobile, and
are encouraged to do as much as is possible for themselves within the context of RCFE care.
- Skilled Nursing (SNF)- 252 beds
Members admitted to this level of care need substantial, continued Skilled Nursing assistance with
life functions, including medications. This is the type of care most of us think of as “Nursing
Home” care.
- Skilled Nursing-Alzheimer’s/Related Dementias- 60 beds
Members requiring this level of care have very special needs for which regular Skilled Nursing is
inappropriate. The Alzheimer’s/dementia neighborhoods will provide safe, therapeutic environments
specifically designed for those experiencing these conditions.
How many beds will be at VHC-Greater Los Angeles/Ventura Counties?
Both Lancaster and Ventura will have 60 beds of Residential Care for the Elderly and a 50 member Adult
Day Health Care program. West Los Angeles with have 88 beds of Residential Care for the Elderly, 252
beds of Skilled Nursing, and 60 beds of Skilled Nursing-Alzheimer’s/Dementia.
