California Veterans Memorial Registry

There are hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of veterans memorials located throughout the Golden State dedicated to the military service of the men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform. These veterans memorials range in size from the simple plaque on a wall in a public building or in a park, to large structures, such as buildings, bridges and even freeways. Until now, there has been no central repository, or Registry, for information about these memorials. Senate Bill 1635 (Chapter 392, 2000), authored by former California State Senator Adam Schiff, changed that by requiring the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CDVA) to establish an on-line statewide California Veterans Memorial Registry. CDVA is responsible for establishing the Registry and making it publicly accessible on this website.

The work on the Registry has been a journey, rather than a destination, and it is our sincere hope that we will be able to record information on most of the memorials in California over time, knowing that we may never identify and register them all. Our goal is to list the location, description and condition, and provide a map to of all known veterans memorials as a further tribute to those who served in the military. With the invaluable help provided by cities, counties, veterans organizations, and members of the public, CDVA has been compiling information and adding it to the Registry. A special note of thanks goes out to Mr. Brian Rooney, of ROONEY INT’L, Northridge, California, for sponsoring Senate Bill 1635. Without his efforts, this Registry would not have become a reality.

We hope you enjoy the Registry website, and will visit from time to time to view additional memorials as they are added.
